Possibilities and conditions for account opening

You can open a bank account in any of Swedbank branches. You will need the following documents:

• Personal identification document - passport or ID card (for residents of Latvia - citizens and non-citizens)
• For minors (residents of Latvia - citizens and non-citizens):

• For non-residents (including persons with residence permits in Latvia) - identification document valid for travelling (passport, ID card) and Latvian residence permission (if exists).

If a non-resident wants to open an account, including persons with residents permits in Latvia, the bank evaluates the necessity of account opening, which might take up to 3 weekdays. In the evaluation process the bank may require additional documents, for example, documents regarding employment, studies, real estate ownership in Latvia or regarding starting or reuniting of the family in Latvia.

Account switching

If you wish to switch your current account from one of the Latvian commercial banks to Swedbank, all the actions regarding closing and switching of your account in another bank are carried out by Swedbank according to the united principles of switching account for private individuals, developed by the Association of Commercial Banks of Latvia.

These principles cover your rights to switch your account and/or associated transaction (direct debit or standing orders) from one Latvian bank to another. According to them the switching takes up to 45 working days.

Swedbank accounts are multi-currency accounts, in which you can keep 17 different currencies

Swedbank offers multi-currency accounts, which means that you don't have to open separate accounts for each currency, since your account will be suitable for keeping 17 different currencies: AUD, CAD, CHF, CZK, DKK, EUR, GBP, HUF, JPY, LTL, LVL, NOK, PLN, RUB, SEK, SGD, USD.

If there is only one currency marked as "allowed" on an account, for example LVL, EUR or USD, it means that in case funds are credited in a currency that is not on the "allowed" list, they will get converted to the base currency of the account. Example: a credited RUB transaction remains in RUB if it is an allowed currency on the account. And a credited RUB transaction will get converted to LVL, if LVL is the base currency and RUB is not allowed.

If you have to work with different currencies we suggest you mark all of them as allowed on your account. After that you will be able to make currency exchange by yourself at any time via Internet banking, in the section Day to day banking / Currency exchange. In the same section you can see the list of available currencies.
